AUDITION AND INTERVIEW PROCESS
Auditions are held in Schoenberg Music Building. Campus maps can be found at the UCLA website, www.ucla.edu, by clicking on “Campus Map”. You should park in structure #2, located near the Westholme/Hilgard entrance to the campus. There is an $8.00 fee for all day parking.

We will email your audition appointment with a specific day and time.
General Information
All applicants are required to audition in person or on videotape. Applicants who reside within 300 miles of UCLA are required to audition on campus. All applicants are strongly encouraged to audition in person if at all possible.
If you are submitting a taped audition, we require it be done on videotape, and it must be received in our office at least two weeks prior to the on campus audition date. See below for details.
Auditions for Fall Quarter 2008 will be held on the UCLA campus in the Schoenberg Music Building. All applicants will be notified of their audition appointment by email sometime in December. Your audition appointment will include a specific day and time.
All applicants are required to perform an audition, submit to a brief interview before a small committee (usually 2-3) of Ethnomusicology faculty and complete a 30 minute music theory exam either before or after the audition. The exam will be given each hour starting at 10:00am and ending at 5:00pm. If you have indicated Jazz
Performance Studies as your primary interest, your audition/interview will be with our
Jazz faculty, and your audition repertoire must be jazz.

Ethnomusicology Audition/Interview – World Music
DATE TBA
No specific instrument or repertoire is required. Applicants should be capable of performing an individual audition, for a minimum of 10 minutes. Vocal auditions are eligible. Repertoire may be western or traditional, classical or popular.
Although sight-reading is not required, you may be asked about your ability to do so. Please note we do not provide accompanists. A cd/cassette/video machine is available for your use.
You should expect to discuss your background, goals, and major influences as they relate to the ethnomusicology major during your interview. The interview is normally 5-10 minutes.
You will also be asked to complete a 30 minute music theory exam either before or after the audition. The exam will be given each hour starting at 10:00am and ending at 5:00pm.

Ethnomusicology Audition/Interview – Jazz Studies

Applicants who indicate Jazz Studies as their primary area should prepare a 10-15 minute individual audition of jazz standards for their instrument and the ability to improvise.
We do not provide a repertoire list. A minimum of two selections should be prepared. All traditional jazz instruments including voice, piano and guitar are eligible for an audition. Saxophone is the only eligible woodwind instrument.
Accompanists are not provided. If you will need additional equipment such as guitar amplifiers, please indicate this on your Audition Confirmation form. A drum set is provided.
Following your prepared performance, you will be expected to perform improvisations with a backing rhythm section or Jamie Ebersol tape (provided by the department). Sight-reading may also be asked of you. A brief interview will follow.
You will also be asked to complete a 30 minute music theory exam either before or after the audition. The exam will be given each hour starting at 10:00am and ending at 5:00pm.
Auditioning by Videotape:
Applicants who plan to audition by videotape should be sure it includes the following:
1. An audible, clearly visible solo performance. You should announce the names of each
piece and instrument being used prior to your playing. You should perform either a
minimum of two selections, or a minimum of 10 minutes.
World Music: What you choose to perform, and which instrument(s) is totally up to you.
Jazz: Jazz standards are required. All traditional jazz instruments including voice, piano and guitar are eligible. Saxophone is the only eligible woodwind instrument.
2. After the performance, on the videotape you should briefly discuss your musical
background, why you have applied to the Ethnomusicology major, and what your future plans are as they relate to this major.
